Why Now Is A Great Time For Core Aeration For Your Dallas Lawn

core aeration on a dallas lawn

The most important thing you can do for your lawn each year is to aerate the soil. In our Dallas service area, spring is the best time to do this because you want to aerate when things are growing. This gives new growth the best chance of success. Today we're going to talk about what core aeration does and how to do it.

How Core Aeration Helps Your Lawn

As your lawn gets compacted by foot traffic, rainwater, and other forces, your turfgrass starts to choke. Core aeration removes small, dime-sized cores of dirt from the soil to allow oxygen, water, and nutrients to get down to the roots of your grass, and give the roots space to grow. This makes your turfgrass strong and able to outcompete weeds and other grasses that try to invade your lawn. There is no better way to get a greener, healthier, weed-free lawn, than with routine aeration, and now is a great time to do it!

The Core Aeration Process

If you want to tackle your own core aeration, there are a few things you should consider. Aeration isn't a simple process, and there are a few ways things can go wrong.

Equipment — You'll need to rent a machine if you don't have one. We recommend getting a machine that allows you to turn, rather than stop and spin the machine for each pass. Make sure it is a plug aerator that removes cores from the ground, not a solid fork that pokes holes. These can cause your lawn to be more compacted.

Safety — You'll want to get safety gear for your body, such as eye protection, steel-toed boots, and thick pants. That machine can throw up dirt and rocks, which can do more than leave a little welt on your skin.

Preparation — If you have an inground sprinkler system or pipes that run under the surface of your lawn, you'll need to clearly mark where these are. An aeration machine can do a lot of damage to hidden items just below the surface.

Practice — You should practice operating the aeration machine away from your home before you attempt to get near your driveway, walkways, and landscaping. If it gets away from you, you could be dealing with frustrating repair costs.

Muscle — Be aware that aeration takes some muscle. Pushing a big aeration machine around on your lawn is hard work; really hard work. You'll probably want to do your aeration in the early morning before the sun starts to heat things up. And be sure to stay hydrated.
